Here’s what the Deputy Minister said about the ongoing teachers’ strike

Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide, has urged teachers to exercise restraint over government’s failure to pay their legacy arrears.

According to him, the arrears were inherited challenges which the incumbent government is not planning on shunning.

“What we are doing as a government is to clear the mess the previous government left. The truth is ever since the incumbent came to power in 2017, we have not incurred arrears like the previous government did so what the teachers are talking about is not a new cost, they are old cost from the legacy debt,” he told Accra-based Peace FM, monitored by

He said the teachers’ legacy arrears was an unsuccessful initiative by Mahama’s government to pay teachers who have not been paid over a period of time which the government is taking steps to rectify.

He, therefore, assured teachers that the remaining areas would be paid in due time.

We can’t just get up and solve everything at once, we have to take one step at a time. Government has paid 85% of over 120,232 teachers who were affected by the initiative, for the government to pay up to this percentage of a cost incurred is highly commendable which shows the rest of the arrears would be paid,” he said.
