The largest opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) says it will take its own referee into the upcoming 2020 general elections since it does not trust the Electoral Commission to run a fair election.

According to the NDC, the conduct of Jean Mensa led Electoral Commission since assuming office has amply shown that it cannot be impartial, hence the party has put its destiny into its hands and is poised to win the election overwhelmingly such that the result can’t be challenged.

“When Azumah Nelson was going to fight Jeff Fenech in Australia everybody was scared in this country. Azumah Nelson said don’t worry, I’ll take my referee into the ring. So we[NDC] are going to take our referee into the ring Azumah Nelson’s style. So when you are hit and you lay down bleeding from all parts of the body no referee will declare you a winner,” the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia told Nana Aba Anomoah on State of Affairs show on GHOne TV.

He further slammed the EC over its penchant for calling emergency meetings which drag for long hours.

“Since this EC came to office, most of the meetings that are held are described as emergency meetings, so we are having an emergency Electoral Commission. We just held one emergency meeting this week and another emergency meeting has been announced for next week. And the emergency meetings instead of being a single item you go there and they ambush you with all other things.”

Johnson Asiedu Nketia further noted that this is the first time a sitting government would have been the one composing the seven-member panel and it’s going to participate in an election that is going to be supervised by them.

Asked if that is to suggest that the NDC doesn’t have confidence in the current leadership of the Electoral Commission, Asiedu Nketia responded: “Our confidence level is very low because all the things being done are being done the wrong way and I agree with the people who say the nation is moving in the wrong direction.”
